Fridge LEDs

Bought a new fridge. Opened the door and was greeted with 80W of incandescent heaters! Yikes. An hour later, the guts of the light were ripped out, and a 750mA Xitanium driver was stuffed in to power three Cree XR-E emitters. Fantastic white light for a tiny fraction of the power and heat. Big advantage of this creation is that you also get to see what's for dinner. After a few weeks, the light has gone through some changes and is now seven white Crees and one red Cree all running at 350 mA. Less heat and more light with a bit of warmth.

As you likely already know - taking pictures of "light" is all but impossible. But here's what it looks like after the first conversion (the silver tape in the upper right is where I removed some other "extraneous" parts of my new fridge.

The emitters are thermally epoxied to an aluminum U-channel. That channel is then clamped to the plastic stiffener that used to support the double bulb assembly (you can see the reflector behind it all). The Xitanium driver is stuffed up into a cavity behind the opening.

The curse of being me is NEVER being satisfied with anything. . I reconfigured two more times. First with a CreeBar with one red:

It looks a little odd when you sight directly into the lens. But then you never do this without standing on your head.

Next improvement was to add some outriggers. These extra whites push the light into the back more.

Impossible to get a good feel for what it looks like with the red included, but what the heck. Here's another try.
